Comments

Progress has been slow overnight with the ship heading into strong westerly winds. Comfort around the ship has been reasonably good.
Yesterday evening we retrieved the first Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) cache and deployed the second one which will be trawled for 450 nautical miles. We are starting to prepare for our arrival at Davis. Yesterday we constructed the tag on/tag off board for accounting for people on and off the ship. Thanks to Josh and Cameron for pulling all that together.
As a way of informing and educating Australians about Antarctica and Australian activities there, the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) administers the Australian Antarctic Arts Fellowship enabling those with a non-science focus to experience Antarctica first hand so that they may communicate this unique experience and understanding to other Australians. Artist John is on his way with us to Davis and Mawson - he will stay at each station for 1 month where he will paint his impressions of the continent. He has already set up his equipment on the ship and the paint is starting to flow
Last night Valentin gave us a great presentation about his original home in Romania with a special emphasis on the architecture of the region. It was enjoyed by all especially the tradespeople on board who took a very keen interest in it. It just begs the question will it influence the end result of the Waste Management Facility and Helicopter Hangar which are being constructed this summer at Davis by these guys.
Yesterday was Kerryns birthday and we surprised her at dinner with a birthday cake and a rousing rendition of “happy birthday”. No secrets are safe on the Aurora Australis!

Cheers
Tony and Mike
