Voyage 1 departed Hobart yesterday (15/10/2013) at 1850 local time with 90 expeditioners on board. The objectives of this voyage are to complete the resupply of Davis Station, to deliver and retrieve expeditioning crews from Davis and Mawson station and to complete a number of approved scientific and operational projects.
Prior to departure yesterday afternoon all on board got down to organising themselves for the voyage to Davis. Ships safety briefings were conducted and a practice muster on the heli-deck took place to ensure everyone knows what is expected of them in the event of an emergency. The southern ocean on the first night at sea has provided some heavy rolling of the ship which has made sleep difficult for many on board. We have however made good progress with the ship operating on both engines. The ship has initially been steered direct south prior to heading west tonight, this in an effort to minimise the effect of a significant weather system which we will continue to encounter over the next few days. All on board are in good spirits looking forward to the days and weeks ahead.
Cheers
Tony and Mike
