Ahoy Shipmates,
A busy day aboard the AMALTAL EXPLORER with whales in sight, on acoustics, and in the reports! We are also busy organizing our return to Nelson, breaking down equipment, packing and stowing gear, and returning Antarctic clothing. The ship's crew have been busy over the last 24 hours cleaning the ship in preparation for their handover to the new crew early next week. Suzie, one of our resident acousticians, has been walking on people's backs. She also says "Hi Mum".
Our ETA in Nelson has now been confirmed as 0100 in the morning on Sunday 17 March, which will give us a good run at unloading and decommissioning our AAD equipment. In the meantime, the science work still goes on, we are presently investigating sighting no. 720, a New Zealand Blue whale, for Photo ID purposes.
Until tomorrow,
Regards Chris, Margaret, and the VWhales Team
