This morning we awoke to the first sight of land in 38 days as we transited past the Auckland Is marine reserve. The Island is the remnant of a series of ancient volcano and appears windswept and barren, but possessed of a certain rugged beauty. The Island is home to numerous southern ocean species including seals, penguins, and seabirds of several varieties.
Once past and clear of the marine sanctuary we have continued with the process of photo ID of the cetacean species we are encountering - at the moment we have closed a pair of southern right whales to the minimum allowed 50m to take photos.
All is well onboard, with our preparations for our return to Nelson gathering pace.
