Hi All,
Overnight a change of strategy has emerged. While we were able to get photo ID of the whales in the area we have been working in, the weather was too rough to permit any close work and limited the ability to take biopsy samples. Coupled with the general behaviour of the whales, we were unable to achieve sufficiently close approach to place satellite tags either. The plan now is to head south towards the entrance to the Ross Sea adjacent to the ice pack, where at present we are detecting weak (distant) blue whale calls.
Weather wise we are enjoying much improved conditions, with the sea state and swell significantly better and visibility improved to near perfect. As we have passaged south we have seen several species, including humpback and killer whales, and penguins.
And Happy Hump day! Today marks the middle day of our voyage!
Until Tomorrow,
Regards Chris, Margaret, and the VWhales Team
