Hi All,
As usual last night we had our "Dinner Whales" - in the form of a pod of about 12 killer whales which played around the ship for about 30 minutes.
This morning was a little frustrating - we tracked an Antarctic Blue Whale overnight, however he was a little camera shy and we spent the morning interacting with him on and off until lunch. We were able to take both left and right side photo ID to add to the database, no biopsy unfortunately.
The succession of weather patterns which are passing through our location are bringing pretty ordinary weather, which is limiting our ability to sight whales. We are however acoustically tracking some ABWs to the south east towards the Balleny Islands, which we are presently making towards at slow speed. As yet the ice picture appears quite confused around the islands, so it is possible that they have not yet cleared out. If that is the case, we may make towards the northern part of the Ross Sea, which is now clear enough to be navigable.
Morale onboard remains disgustingly high!
