Yesterday we flew an aerial reconnaissance flight and an over-flight of the buoys we have been deploying. Two aircraft were flown, close together to provide SAR (Search And Rescue). Whenever we fly more than 5nm from the ship a second aircraft is deployed to cover SAR. We always ensure no more than 6 people in total are in the two helicopters so that everyone can fit in one aircraft should there be a problem. Wendy our media specialist went on the flight to take footage with a normal video camera. Whilst it's encouraging to see leads and open water nearby, there are still no crack in our immediate vicinity.

Last night was Halloween and our American expeditioners were in the mood to party so we had a BBQ on the ice at the foot of the gangway. The galley and crew did an amazing job (again!), setting up the BBQ, and with some of the expeditioners, making a table and seats from the deep snow that covers the ice all around.

Science continues, unabated on the ice and onboard the ship...

Cheers
Andy, Brett
