The pack and the Aurora Australis are now drifting in a north westerly direction. Satellite imagery shows the ice floes around us are beginning to break up which is also encouraging.
Even the wildlife is showing some interest, with minke whales sharing a seal hole in the ice to grab air as they pass by underneath. Initially the hole was too small but a few nudges from below have opened it up so the whales can get their head and blow hole out of the water, rising up and blowing a plume of spray before slipping back down. Quite spectacular from the ice and the bridge only 50m from the ship.
Science continues on the ice with various experiments benefitting from our extended stay at ice station 8.
Rowan must work out to stay in such great shape. He and Peter have spent the last few hours cutting and digging huge blocks of snow to make a table for tomorrows BBQ on the ice...
Cheers
Andy, Brett
