Comments

It’s very windy on top of the ships mast, high above the smoke stack in
the ice lookout. The view is stunning and the distance to the horizon
much greater than from the bridge, and it is from here that we spot the
next ice station, Ice Station 3.

It is a beautiful sunny day. The ice is thicker than the other stations
we've encountered, many metres thick in places, and it's remained
bitterly cold with temperatures currently below -25 and dropping.

The cold is playing havoc with more than just fingers, toes and noses!
Machinery doesn't like it at all and even Swiss made surveying equipment
is struggling in the cold, let alone outboard motors for the safety
boats, chain saws for cutting ice and petrol ice drills and generators.
pretty much everything requiring a battery needs some form of insulation
to eke all of the power possible from it...

Spirits remain high however as most people are happy to be on the ice
once more. At least three crew have been sighted having their photograph
taken sitting over an ice hole with fishing rods... No doubt it's just a
matter of time before the golf clubs come out...

Cheers

Andy, Brett
