Yesterday we continued work on the ice, finishing and packing up all of
the projects on the ice by 8pm, in advance of deteriorating weather. The
only project left on the ice was Robs krill pump which is mounted in a
20 foot container that we place on the ice beside the ship. The
container stays on the crane chains so will stay with us if we move in
the ice! After two hours of pumping the steady 30 knot winds had managed
to fill most of the container with blowing snow! Fortunately the ships
plumbing on the decks has steam running through it to stop it freezing
in sub zero temperature so it's a simple job to blow out the snow with a
steam lance...
This morning we cast a TMR (trace Metal Rosette) and a FRRF (fast
Response Rate Flurometer) and are now in the process of doing a CTD
(Conductivity and Temperature at Depth). it has a very large screen with
lots of graphs and information. Good job Jono and the team understand it
all!
And remember you can watch what goes on via the AAD website. Simply
visit: http://www.antarctica.gov.au/webcams/aurora images are uploaded
every 30mins. Or read Wendy's blog at www.aad.gov.au and follow the
SIPEX II blog link on the right hand side of the page...
