Comments

The temperature has now dropped below freezing and unless we become geographically embarrassed, will remain there until early Nov when we expect to leave the pack ice on our way home.

Alison now has the NIWA (National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research) Waves In Water buoys up on the helideck testing their satellite communications system. Each buoy is attached to five yards of the natural filament rope so that it can be lowered either from a helicopter or ships crane, onto a passing flow, with the hope to be to get 8 of them in a straight line from the ice edge into the pack.

And I keep forgetting to add, Wendy our media and communications representative is keeping a blog with a few pictures. It can be accessed from the AAD website www.antarctica.gov.au, then clicking the link on the right hand side of the page...

Finally, we are expecting a visit from mighty King Neptune later this afternoon to welcome and anoint newcomers to the Southern Ocean, a tradition gifted only to those who sail below 60 degrees south. More on that tomorrow, maybe?

Cheers

Andy, Brett
