With a terrific visual farewell from the wintering expeditioners at Mawson we departed for Hobart yesterday afternoon. We have made good progress since we have left. We have now 102 expeditioners on board looking forward to returning to Australia.

Since we left Mawson we have trawled for Krill with great success with the targeted quota being caught. A big well done to Tasha and Penny along with the Aurora Australis deck crew. We have also this morning deployed the last of the ARGO float buoys at the designated latitude. Thanks to Sam and the two Johns for their devotion to the job. The final project for this voyage is the deployment of the Continuous Plankton Recorder which will be done over a total distance of some 2400 nautical miles of the 3000 nautical miles before we reach Hobart.

The on-board entertainment committee are in full swing and last night we had an absorbing presentation from one of the PhD’s on board, John who explained the physics around Auroras, Airglow and Noctilucent clouds along with some stunning photographs. Very much appreciated by all.

The weather at present is a little challenging and the ship is moderately rolling but its only to be expected here in the Southern Ocean

Cheers

Tony and Simon
