Yesterday afternoon after initial inspection of the fast ice in the harbour by boat the Aurora Australis proceeded to break it up. The ice was reasonably thick but in poor condition and was no match for the Class 1A Super Icebreaker. The ice was broken into floes. The ship then moved out into open water for the night allowing the katabatic winds to do their work and blow the ice floes out of Horseshoe Harbour.
This morning we returned to find only a small amount of ice remaining in the harbour which will need to be removed prior to mooring the ship. Cargo operations will commence early afternoon with the ship remaining outside the harbour for now with cargo making the longer journey from ship to shore. Mawson wintering expeditioners and critical round trip project personnel were transferred to the station yesterday afternoon by helicopter and those activities for our stay at Mawson are now well underway.
Cheers Tony and Simon
