Yesterday afternoon we successfully transferred the 29 tonne excavator to shore and the 25 tonne crane to the ship. It was satisfying to get these heavy loads completed. A big thanks to Trent and the Aurora Australis deck crew for a splendid effort in moving these heavy loads safely and without incident. We also transferred live marine samples to the ships aquarium laboratories for transport back to Hobart. Tasha had ensured the aquarium waters had reached sufficiently low temperatures to enable us to take the samples on board.
With the weather forecasted to deteriorate we packed up the ship and moved 10 nm off shore last night with the plan to return to Davis first up this morning. The weather forecast has unfortunately been spot on (thanks to Tim and the BOM team at Davis) and we have been forced to curtail operations for the whole of today and cool our heels out at sea for a further 24 hours. Whilst it’s disappointing it will be an opportunity to recharge our batteries and get ready for the final push to complete resupply at Davis with the following three days weather forecasted to be good. Our plan at present is to depart Davis mid afternoon on Saturday 02 February for Mawson.
All on board continue to be in good health and enjoying a thoroughly deserved days’ rest.
Cheers
Tony and Simon
