Big day of cargo flying yesterday with the tween deck hold of the vessel fully discharged of cargo, as well as some fresh food and a few other bits and pieces. Was an incredibly slick operation at both by the Pilots and by all involved at the ship and station ends who did a great job supporting two helicopter from such a close range.
Today we have deployed more personnel ashore this morning, and will do so again this afternoon. Fresh produce is being flown ashore, Drums of aviation fuel are being rolled down the companionway in preparation for flying ashore and we'll also start re-packing the frozen food for flying ashore soon.
Ship to shore operation are not the only things happening today at Davis though. A Twin Otter fixed wing aircraft recently took off from the Plough Island skiway bound for Mawson station, where it will deploy some personnel and cargo. It will return to Davis today and if the weather holds, conduct a second flight to Mawson to deploy personnel.
Some of the new Davis personnel will also be deployed into the field this afternoon for a night's field training with one of the Field Training Officers (FTOs), these people were only deployed to station this morning, so their first night ashore will be in the field... I'm sure they'll remember that!
Cheers,
Andrew and Mark
