The voyage goals continue to be ticked off, with the acoustic mooring being deployed with little fuss yesterday afternoon. The mooring was placed in waters about 820 m in depth, sitting in between a number of shipping lanes to avoid too much interference from noisy cargo vessels travelling past. All things going well, we'll pick it up again in a day or so. At noon today we shifted from acoustics driving the direction of travel to find blue whales to something akin to a more traditional line-transect survey, with the acoustics listening in on any animals that might be in the area. We'll use that to estimate how many more whales can be heard in passing (and, putatively, targeted) as compared to a standard sighting survey. The shift in survey mode was primarily due to the acoustics team being able to hone their method so well, so fast. They've all done us proud! And, thankfully, the weather continues to be calm and the blue whales amazing .
