Comments

With Bureau of Meteorology predictions suggesting that swell is up to 7 m, with the sea up to 3-4 m on top of that, in the western Bass Strait area, we probably should be happy to be tucked up in port at the moment. However, it's not all grumbles today. It was 'oohhs and aahhhs'
all round when at noon we were treated to a show by the RAAF Roulettes, who were performing over Portland to celebrate National Wish Day. What was particularly special was they seemed to be using the Portland wharf as a focal point to their routine, so we were standing directly beneath some truly hair raising stunts. More news on the photo-ID front: no blue whale photographed during the first voyage in January has been photographed during this March voyage. Is this because the population is rather large (i.e., the probability of re-photographing the same animal is relatively low) or that animals feeding here cycle through over the summer months? It's hard to say from the perspective of our research, but these results will be adding to the knowledge of the blue whales that visit the Bonney Upwelling region in the warmer months. Finally, still hoping to get out on the water on Sunday morning.

REGARDS: Natalie and Dave
