Just a short sitrep today as we're confined to port as a low pressure system whips past. After a busy day setting up on Tuesday, and yesterday's successful start to the second whale voyage, everyone onboard is either relaxing, seeing the sights of Portland, or catching up on work from home. For those of us onboard who had never seen a pygmy blue whale before-or any sort of blue whale, for that matter-the three sightings yesterday will remain in our memories for a long time to come. Yesterday's successes also provided a number of pointers for improving sighting survey and acoustics protocols, so today some of us are working these into our systems for when we journey out again. Today we wait for the seas and winds to die down; Friday afternoon/evening is starting to look good on the forecasts for a chance to leave port; and Saturday's forecast looks almost too good to be true. Fingers crossed.
REGARDS: Natalie and Dave
