Yesterday morning, movement of cargo and science crew onto the MV Eastern Voyager was largely seamless, with the rest of the day spent stowing away gear and briefings. Thank you to the crew of Eastern Voyager, the AAD cargo and shipping teams, Blue Planet Marine and to the various people in Portland that helped us to get ready for our voyage. We left Portland this morning just before 9 am with the plan to spend the day undertaking training and systems checks. While the first whale voyage may have seen rare Shepherd's beaked whales, we sighted our first pygmy blue whale within 3 hours of leaving port, thanks to the sharp eye of our one of acoustics team. Naturally, the sightings team are still nursing their wounded collective pride. The acoustics team have just launched their second sonobuoy and are listening to hear a faint whale call they heard an hour or so ago. Alas, it's back to port tonight to sit out the short, sharp low pressure system that will be passing through over the next couple of days. Fingers crossed for Friday or Saturday for another trip out.
REGARDS: Natalie and Dave
