Aurora entered relatively open waters overnight, with the larger swells and snow encountered later in the evening abating by mid-morning.
As the ship made its way through thicker sections of sea-ice yesterday afternoon, expeditioners and crew took advantage of the milder conditions (air temperatures have been slowly increasing over the past 24 hours) to observe and photograph some of the abundant wildlife (mainly seals and penguins) passing close by.
Voyage Management met with the Ship's Master, senior officers and HeliRes this morning to confirm operational plans following arrival at Casey for the discharge of Station cargo, the back-loading of cargo to be returned to Australia and the embarkation of 32 summer expeditioners. Weather and sea-ice conditions will be monitored over the next few days which will assist Voyage Management and ship's crew determine the best approach to facilitate the transfer of personnel and cargo.
Cheers
