With the forecast improvement in weather becoming apparent late
yesterday afternoon we departed the relative calm of the Western Ice
Shelf and commenced our passage to Mawson Station. Before being able
to ring on passage speed, however, we had to negotiate a large field
of ice bergs, bergy bits and 'growlers' (small chunks of ice named
for the noise they make as the pass along the ship's side). This morning we departed the ice field and are now making best speed to Mawson. The aim is to get to Mawson in time for the forecast weather window to open up later tomorrow. Final briefs and preparations are now 98% complete
