Comments

We are completing a CTD cast to nearly 6 km depth, the deepest of the voyage and apparently the deepest cast ever completed on the Aurora Australis). Failure of a sensor on the previous deep cast meant we needed to repeat that station, which has slowed us down a bit. (Casts to these depths take more than four hours.) But everything is now working well again. We also completed a cast for genomics work at this site, so we can find out what is living at these great depths and what they are doing (e.g. what proteins they are using). As well as finishing off the last few stations, people are busy preparing reports and packing up the gear that is no longer needed, in preparation for our return.

Regards, Steve and Barbara
