Comments

We completed three deep CTD stations and further XBT tests in the last 24 hours. One deep CTD cast this morning was dedicated to the metagenomics team. About 100 litres of water was collected from each of two depths, a few metres above the sea floor and 300 m above the sea floor. The water samples will be filtered and the filters analysed for fragments of genetic material that will tell us what microbes are living at these depths and whether there is a difference between the community living near the sediment and that found in the deep waters above. The swell is starting to build, but so far is sufficiently long that we ride smoothly over the peaks and through the troughs and have been able to continue working. The wind, sea and swell should reach their peak in the next 24 or 36 hours, and then start to ease.

Regards, Steve and Barbara
