A great day today with a huge effort by all the crew and expeditioners to make the commemorative celebrations happen. Helicopters ferried the participants ashore and by mid morning the team of 26 were gathered around the flagpole in front of Mawson’s Huts. In light wind and beautiful light an address from prime Minister Julia Gillard was read by AAD Director Tony Fleming along with a speech by Tony and words from historian Tom Griffiths. The Australian flag was raised and a plaque unveiled along with the laying of a time capsule. It was an amazing day to commemorate the efforts of the 1911-14 Australasian Antarctic Expedition in the Home of the Blizzard in front of the very hut they lived in.
We still have 4 expeditioners ashore with some cargo who couldn’t be retrieved when the always fickle Antarctic weather closed in. Tomorrow we hope to retrieve them and look towards transferring passengers to Dumont D’Urville.
Regards, Robb, Steve, Barbara and Nisha
