The work has continued on our way South. Along with more trawls and water sampling we have also commenced deploying ARGO floats. These robotic ocean sampling instruments are deployed from the ship at various latitudes. They then drift in the ocean at depths down to 2000m collecting oceanographic data, sometimes for years. At various intervals they surface and transmit the data back to scientists around the world by satellite link. Douglas Mawson wrote in The Home of The Blizzard “ Science is just as much interested in problems connected with the depths of the ocean as with those arising from a study of the dry land.” So it is nice to be engaged in marine science as we travel South to commemorate his expedition. The media team onboard continue to blog, write, photograph and film all that is going on, while a series of short talks on the AAE have commenced. Today our captain, Murray, discussed the differences between Mawson’s ship SY Aurora (Captain John King Davis) and our own vessel RSV Aurora Australis. Thank goodness for GPS and a steel hull we all say!
