Voyage 3 departed Hobart last night after a huge effort by the ship’s crew, all at the wharf and the departing expeditioners to get everything loaded and lashed for departure. We are off to undertake a range of marine science projects and importantly to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Douglas Mawson’s Australasian Antarctic Expedition at Cape Denison in Commonwealth Bay. The marine science has started already with the first trawl today coming up with success in capturing a pteropod as part of a study into the response of Southern Ocean zooplankton to ocean acidification resulting from anthropogenic CO2 emissions (Go Team Acid!). We are travelling in far greater comfort than Mawson and his team would have been aboard the 50m long steam and sail powered Aurora 100 years ago. Yet we are still accompanied by Southern Ocean seabirds such as Wandering Albatross and Giant Petrels, just as Mawson would have been. Happy Birthday to our Captain Murray.
REGARDS: Robb, Steve, Barb and Nisha
