Voyage 1 departed Hobart at 1830 yesterday, thanks to all involved ensuring the ship was loaded and stowed safely. Many stayed outside as long as they could to enjoy the fabulous weather and to see land disappear into the distance. For some this will be the last they see their families, trees, pets and grass for up to 12-18mths. The seas have been reasonably kind to us so far. Most people have been up for meals but there are still alot of people catching up on some sleep and making the most of being able to relax and watch movies while they can. We deployed our first CPR (Continuous Plankton Recorder) this morning. The unit is towed around 100m behind the ship for approx. 450nm while we continue making our way towards Antarctica. Over the length of our journey we are anticipating deploying the CPR 4-5 times. Once analysed the data gathered from these units are used to map the biodiversity of plankton of the Southern Ocean. Our talk program kicks off tonight with a presentation from Dougie “Antarctica, A Helicopter View”. As well tonight will be the first of our six clock changes, to ensure on arrival at Davis we will be on the same time as the station. Clocks will be retarded 1 hour – so an extra hour to sleep in tomorrow before waking to another scrummy breakfast. REGARDS: Sharon and Leanne
