AT 1659 yestrday the last line was let go and the 2010/11
Antarctic season commenced with the sailing of the Aurora Australis on
the Trials Voyage. Although only programmed for four day's, this is an
intensive period of activity to 'shake down' the ship and its'
scientific equipment. This is a precursor to the five voyages that will
be undertaken this year in support of the Australian Antarctic program.
The main focus of the trials will be ensuring that the ship's crew and
expeditioners are fully conversant in the operation of the scientific
equipment to be used on the marine science voyage programmed to take
place between Voyage 2 and Voyage 3. In addition, the procedures
governing operations will be checked and double checked to ensure the
safety of those operating the gear. The next three days will see the
ship operating on a continuous 12 hour shift routine throughout the day
and night to achieve an ambitious program of trials. Also aboard are a
combined team form the AAD's Information Technology and
Telecommunications sections working on the ship's network infrastructure
as well as some programmers refining the underway data collection systems.
The weather has been kind to us since leaving Hobart, with a spectacular
sunset last night and moderate winds today. Visibility is not
particularly good at the moment due to fog, but this has not hindered
any of our operations. At the moment we are off the east coast of
Tasmania testing out the Conductivity, Temperature and Depth (CTD) winch
system prior to undertaking a cast to 1000 metres with the gear. Some
hydro acoustics work is also due to commence this afternoon.
All aboard enjoying the relatively smooth seas and the work program. Hot
peach and sour cream baked dessert was particularly good last night,
offset with some sensational macadamia nut ice cream - doesn't get any
better than that!
Regards
Rob and Jono.
