Comments

After easing somewhat overnight, the winds have increased again to 30 knots for the last few hours. The ship continues to move around quite a bit and a few are suffering the effects; after a week or two of calm seas in the ice, whatever sea legs acquired on the way south need to be found again. The ship is pretty quiet, everyone going about the business of wrapping up their work, writing reports, or catching up on sleep. Some sampling continues. Instruments on board are sampling the temperature, salinity, carbon dioxide and fluorescence of surface waters as we go. These measurements show that we just crossed the Subantarctic Front, where temperatures jumped up by about 4 degrees in only a few kilometres – a rapid change, given that the overall change in temperature over the more than 2000 km separating Tasmania and Antarctica is only about 15 degrees Celsius at this time of year. Tonight we will have the last of our special occasions, a quiz night followed by the Aurora Jug Band Revue. Two more sleeps.

REGARDS: Steve, Fred and Penny
