The winds have picked up, averaging 35-45 knots over the last 16 hours or so. The ship is rolling and pitching heavily in the short swell and we’ve had to reduce speed. Conditions are forecast to ease a bit over the next few days and we should be able to pick up some more time. This is really the first time we have seen anything like rough seas since we left Hobart on January 5. As usual, people showed remarkable creativity with their costumes for the Creatures of the Sea fancy dress party last night. Outfits ranged from clever and minimalist, to elaborate and beautiful, and occasionally twisted and disturbing. With the ship moving around as much as it is, it’s a challenge to do much besides hang on and watch the huge clouds of spray thrown up when the bow slams down into a trough between the waves.
