We continue to make steady progress and it’s a good feeling to be south of 60S at last. During a CTD station this morning, we had a visit from a Japanese fisheries research vessel, the Umitaka Maru. Many of the scientists on both vessels know each other from previous voyages so it was fun (and unusual) to have a chance to wave hello as the Japanese vessel did a circle around us while we completed a CTD. We are finishing off the last few very deep (>4000 m) stations before we start running up the continental slope of Antarctica. Meanwhile, we are hatching plans for how to work around the two large icebergs that are occupying part of the area where we planned to work.
