Comments

We received a timely reminder last night that working at sea is never easy. A problem with the winch meant that the CTD wire parted when the instrument was being recovered. The safety line attached to the instrument did its job and made sure the instrument was not lost. The crew, led by Roger Davis, showed great seamanship in getting the package back on board. When the Niskin bottles are full of water, the package weighs about half a tonne, so it is not a trivial exercise to get it back out of the water and onto the vessel. The fact that we recovered from a difficult situation with no damage to people or equipment is a testament to the professionalism of those aboard. The engineers think they have solved the issue with the winches and we hope to be back at work this afternoon.

REGARDS: Steve, Fred and Penny
