Arrived and anchored by first light. 23 passengers have gone ashore by
climbing down the bunker door pilot ladder and carefully timing the step
off the ladder into a 16 foot Inflatable Rubber Boat (IRB). The
southerly swell causes the IRB to rise and fall so timing is fairly
critical if you want to land in the IRB, rather than the drink (which is
currently a balmy 9 degrees!). Once on board the IRB passengers are
transferred to a Light Amphibious Resupply Cargo (LARC) which carries 12
passengers at a time to the beach and through the surf. By lunch all of
the higher priority cargo was discharged leaving only the 50 tonnes of
timber bundles, many of which are 6m long and proving difficult to move
on a rolling ship at anchor. Nonetheless we expect to have the Sandy Bay
board walk materials in place by civil twilight when the helicopters are
forced to shut down due to lack of light - this should be around 17:30 local time
tonight.
Cheers
Chunky, Beechy, Leanne.
