Today we were at Hurd Point at the far South of the island to establish a bait depot. A very busy day for many, with the crew managing the heli deck for loads to be flown off, keeping the ship in position and also getting more loads up and out of the hold. A team from the ship and station were ashore at Hurd Point all day receiving loads and the heli pilots and engineers were going nonstop to keep the cargo flowing. At the end of the day the depot was completely established, ready for winter baiting operations. Elsewhere on the island cargo loads were flown from station to Green Gorge while science and other groups were moved between the various huts by helicopter and their own feet as they worked in the field. Today we also managed to fly one helicopter down to Bishop and Clerk Islands, some 20nm South of Macca. This seldom visited group of rocks is home to many nesting sea birds, including black browed albatross, and our albatross biologist undertook a photographic survey of the islands. Cargo is being prepared again this afternoon for fly off at green Gorge or the station tomorrow should the weather allow.
REGARDS: Robb, Leanne and Martin
