We arrived at Macquarie Island at Midday today with the Island hidden until the last moment by low cloud and rain. The following sea and 30 knot NE wind that we had coming into Buckles bay did not bode well for operations and indeed once in the bay the swell proved too much for small watercraft or helicopter operations to and from the ship. As a result we are now stooging up and down the island on the east coast. This coast provides a good calm lee in the usually westerly weather here at Macca, yet today it is not to be. Everyone is keen to get ashore and start work however we will have to wait to see what tomorrow brings. Some of the keenest expeditioners on the ship are the 12 dogs that have come to the island to detect rabbits as part of the pest eradication project being undertaken this winter. The 7 springers, 4 labs and 1 terrier will, along with their handlers, be an important part of the eradication operation. The sun has been out this afternoon, the wind has backed to the NW and we hope the swell in Buckles Bay may ease tomorrow morning.
