Comments

The struggle continues. We continue to make glacially slow progress out here, but it's not for want of trying. We left a trail of destruction behind us in the battered thick multiyear ice, and entered the rafted and ridged new ice yesterday afternoon. The anticipation of an easier passage was quickly replaced by the realisation that it was going to be more of the same, with only slightly different scenery. The “rubble” is only marginally easier to move in than the bigger floes we’ve left behind, although the ship is now making more of a dent in it than we were last night. There’s a darker band of ice about a mile ahead of us that may have less pressure in it, and we can just make out a water-sky to our NE. All we need is wind, swell, both, or an act of god to go our way, and the ice may ease up. Since commencing our escape 48 hours ago, we've travelled 1.04 km, with 510 m in the last 24 hours. An emergency muster drill this morning had us all outside for some fresh air in light snowfall.
