We completed cargo operations yesterday afternoon flying the last of the bundles ashore by sling loading them under the helicopters. We also recovered a Honda quad to be returned to Australia for repairs. The 1st Mate and 3rd Mate did an ice reconnaissance flight returning with a drawing not dissimilar to those produced by my niece at age 5! Amazingly this cartographic work of art took us through dense sheets of broken fast ice and sea ice compressed by the northern winds of a few days earlier. weaving cunningly between ice floes and bergs we entered the open waters of the southern ocean in under 12 hours. We are about to slow down for an hour or so to have a go at catching some live krill to take home for biologists to study. After this we will celebrate with a BBQ on the trawl deck and a quite drink in the bar as a small reward and show of appreciation for the fantastic job, and the enduring patience of the crew and expeditioners during the fly off resupply at Mawson.
Cheers
Andy, Margaret and Kate.
