We had hoped to fly the last passengers ashore this morning but the weather beat us to it. By 0900 the helicopter engineers ashore were taking the blades off the three helicopters to reduce the risk of damage to them over the following two days of blizzard conditions. Winds at Mawson are expected to peak tomorrow at 60-70 knots (111-130kmh) with gusts to 80 knots (148kmh). Winds should be a few knots lighter at the ship, 33 miles away.
We spent a few hours creating a turning circle and sailing out into the polynya. We then used the ships echo sounder to gather data for future hydrographic charts before we were forced to return to our previous location by reduced visibility.
Cheers
Andy, Margaret and Kate.
