We started ice breaking early this morning in a polynya north, north
west of the station. The ship has to stop each time we change a shipping
container at the "ready slot" where a team of expeditioners and crew
unload the cargo manually onto pallets, forklift it down the side of the
vessel and prepare it to be flown ashore either inside a helicopter or
as a sling load.
Each time we ram the ice we manage to break approximately one ship
length, it takes about five minutes to back up, power forwards, come to
a halt having broken the ice and back up again. Only another 700 rams to go!
Cheers
Margaret, Andy and Kate.
