By 1640hrs yesterday afternoon, resupply was completed and all expeditioners bound for Hobart were on board the ship. The ship’s horn was sounded and the ship began backing out of the ice. Emotions were high as the winterers on board farewelled those staying for the summer, and said goodbye to Davis station that has been their home for the last 12 months. During the five days the ship was parked in the ice off Davis, just over 700,000L of fuel and around 150,000L of fresh water was transferred from ship to shore. 517 tonne of cargo was discharged, and 261 tonne of cargo was loaded for Return to Australia (RTA). In addition, several science projects were conducted during the resupply period, ranging from hydro-acoustics testing, to penguin surveys, to the replacement of an Automatic Weather Station (AWS) at Woop Woop Skiway. Further airborne laser surveys were also conducted. A successful helicopter transfer of expeditioners to Mawson also took place, returning two expeditioners to Davis that are now onboard with us to return to Hobart. That all this was achieved in such a short period of time is a credit to the dedication, hard-work and commitment of all involved. Many thanks to all expeditioners and ship’s crew for a job well done.
