We made great progress overnight and continued to do so until the early hours of this morning when we encountered some thicker ice. The weather this morning only permitted a short-range ice recce by helicopter, however, it provided enough information to make headway once more. The Mates and Master have been earning their keep on the Bridge today with some up the ship’s mast radioing best course to those on the Bridge who constantly run from one side to the other to examine the type and thickness of the ice as the ship pushes through. A bit more wildlife was sighted this morning in the form of a crabeater seal and also numerous Adelie penguins scooting along on their bellies hurriedly moving away from the big orange ship. A few expeditioners have been revealing their creative side with designs for the voyage t-shirt flowing thick and fast. There are also some fabulous entries in the photo competition – voting is going to be tough! Tonight’s talk by Theo is set to be enlightening; it is titled ‘Schlieren photography, and other distractions...’
