We are finally getting a hint that we are approaching the ‘Riveria of the South’, as Davis is known. Today a beautiful sunrise pre-empted a glorious blue-sky sunshine day that was perfect for flying. There was ‘sea-smoke’ rising off the water this morning and the ice floes were dotted with snow ridges making it look like a lunar landscape. After an early start to hear the weather forecast, the sea-ice acoustics field team were deployed by helicopter onto the ice. With radio call-signs such as ‘Iceman’ and ‘SkyLab’ one could be forgiven for thinking we were in a science-fiction movie. In actual fact, this project is conducting important acoustic ranging tests as a precursor to deploying an automated underwater vehicle in 2012 to collect critical sea-ice mass data. While operations were underway, our resident Voyage Elf continued on his merry way fixing and improving all things electronic, and our Social Committee were again busy this time planning a voyage photo competition. The categories are: Wildlife, Landscape, and, People, with the catch being that all photos must have been taken this voyage! Submissions are open until Friday and then a presentation will be had for all to cast their vote. Reporting on other social activities, the Murder game finally came to a close, with Jenn strutting her survival skills by making the final kill thereby winning the game. Tonight we will transit through the ice once more as we continue on our journey towards the great white continent.
REGARDS: Karin, Sharon & Lance
