The ugg boots and flannel were swapped for feathered fascinators at yesterdays Southern Ocean telecast of the Melbourne Cup. Well, maybe not... but the rest of the festivities rivalled the best of what Melbourne could put on. After being kept below deck for a day or so the Master gave the all clear early in the morning to open the outside decks, and many took the opportunity to go out and stretch their legs before the big race. The galley served up a fantastic lunch with fresh asparagus soup, chicken kebabs and a calamari stir-fry a few of the highlights (yes Rob, in case you were wondering the desserts were magnifique too). Most settled in front of the big screen shortly after lunch and the tension was palpable during the wait to see who had run and won the $2 and $5 dollar sweeps. Most heard very little of the actual race call over the laughter as the video started to stream – cut-out horses, whales, seals, penguins, a chicken, and I think it was an onion, all 'ran' 3200m competing for the inside barrier before Americain came storming home. Much fun was had by all and of course the real winner was Camp Quality. Many thought the chicken was robbed and the seal would have done better on a wetter track! Once again, a great job by the Social Committee. Amidst all this frivolity, the crew is hard at work ensuring the ship runs smoothly and preparatory work is underway in planning for Davis resupply. In particular, the Master and our resident sea-ice expert, ‘Dr Laser’ as he has become known, have been studiously analysing the sea-ice imagery and weather data to determine our most efficient course to reach the location for the sea-ice research and thereafter our passage into Davis.
