Our special occasion and quiz night last night was a great success thanks to the efforts of the galley crew and our outstanding social committee. There were just over 70 participants (expeditioners and crew) who took part in 6 rounds of trivia questions on the topics of Australiana, sport, music, general knowledge, and Antarctica, with a special celebrity heads thrown in as well. Our MC ‘Reo’ along with his bubbly band of assistants both entertained us and challenged our minds. There were offers to obtain double points if you had the courage to dance the ‘moon-walk’ (well done, Matt!) or sing a tune. It was a great chance to mix with everyone on board and have a bit of fun. Later into the night we were informed of an emergency involving the French program, and responded to a request to divert the ship’s course towards the French Antarctic base Durmont D’Urville. All expeditioners were informed first thing this morning, and we are currently steaming south-east to be ready to assist if required. Our thoughts are with our French colleagues on board the French research vessel L’Astrolabe and at Durmont D’Urville. We will continue on our present course and await further information and instruction from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority who is coordinating the search and rescue effort in liaison with the Australian Antarctic Division and other international Antarctic programs.
