Our weather conditions continue to remind us we are heading towards Antarctica. The air temperature has plummeted, there have been several snow showers, and moderate to rough seas. Once again, the crew did a great job in retrieving and re-deploying the Continuous Plankton Recorder amidst the wash on the trawl deck. This is the fourth unit to be deployed for this voyage. On the social front, expeditioners have been assisting the galley crew in preparing for our first special occasion tonight. Pizza, pavalova and quiz night – it doesn’t get much better than this! Quiz teams were formed by random selection of names of those who wished to participate, to provide a mix of knowledge across ages and gender, and assist all in getting to know more faces on board. The ‘murder’ game has commenced, and preparations are underway for next week’s Melbourne Cup. Our weather forecasters on board have been doing a sterling job keeping us forewarned of significant low pressure systems on our course, enabling the Master and crew to determine our most efficient course. It is hoped that this stint of poor weather early in the voyage, will lead to fine conditions once we are in the ice to enable the sea-ice research project to achieve all its objectives. Further planning meetings and briefings are underway regarding this science project, as we eagerly await the first signs of ice! REGARDS: Karin, Sharon & Lance
