We awoke to calmer conditions this morning which was a pleasant surprise. Thanks to the Master & Officers on board, who altered the ship’s course, we missed the worst part of the weather system. With the smoother seas, a few early birds were spotted in the gym this morning, and there were quite a few more faces at breakfast. The bridge is also proving a popular location for expeditioners to enjoy the mesmerizing waves and be on the lookout for wildlife –mostly seabirds at present. Photos of all expeditioners and crew have now been posted on the whiteboard in the restaurant. This is a must as we get to know all 84 expeditioners and 27 crew on board. The vast array of backgrounds and experience on the ship is quite amazing. A planning meeting was held today with scientists, voyage management, helicopter and ship’s crew, to discuss logistics for the sea-ice science project that will occur in the pack-ice. This is the first of several meetings to ensure we are ready to make the most of suitable weather conditions one we reach the pack-ice. Bets continue to be placed in anticipation of the first iceberg sighting.
