This morning we began transiting once more towards Davis, with preparations for our arrival in full swing. Both helicopter and environmental briefings have now been completed, as well as the boot-washing and vacuuming of backpacks and outer clothing that expeditioners will take ashore. At 1100hrs this morning, Zach, the youngest expeditioner on board announced over the P.A.system for all to observe a minute’s silence for Remembrance Day, as we took a moment to remember those who have lost their lives in war. Since passing 60 degrees south, expeditioners have been wondering when they might expect a visit from King Neptune. He arrived yesterday afternoon, and lived up to his reputation. In brief, this year’s ceremony (for all those sailing below 60 degrees south for the first time) went something like this: hailing the King; being adorned by a lovely mermaid; greeting a salmon; and 'sampling' a couple of ladles of a very special mix concocted in the galley. The crew did a great job of dressing up, running the show and making the ceremony 'unforgettable' to all. Special mention must go to the self proclaimed 'Ice Man’ also known as Dr Laser, who incurred the King's wroth for meddling in the Antarctic honours system; Jan got to experience the ceremony despite being a seasoned expeditioner! Following a major clean-up effort everyone retired to the trawl deck for a fantastic barbeque and to share a few stories of Neptune's visit whilst they savored their 'special occasion' beer or wine around the barbecue amongst drifting snow.
