Yesterday was busy day aboard the Tangaroa as the ship became the productive scientific work platform; with 1 satellite tag deployed, 5 biopsies collected and 8 fluke photos recorded from the decks of the Tangaroa. This occurred as a result of cooperative and inquisitive humpback whales that were more than keen to be involved in our scientific activities and came right up to the ship. We did launch Remora later in the day when the swell had decreased enough to work the whales. Today we are heading towards the eastern side of Sturge Island in the Balleny Group to re-visit areas previously work earlier in the voyage. The weather looks to be improving as the day progresses and we are hoping to maximise the scientific opportunities today as this is our last operational day before we begin our transit back to Wellington. I forgot to mention that on Saturday it was the chief cook's birthday, so belated Happy Birthday, Kim.
REGARDS:
Hully, Sarah and Nick
