Comments

We have escaped from the lee of Sturge Island, HOORAY and we are heading to
an area approximately 50nm SE of Sturge Island where we were working earlier in
the week. We are planning to look for blue whales using sonobuoys
(underwater microphones) and then hopefully confirm with visual sightings.
Conditions are not suitable for RIB work today but at least we are back
doing presence-absence whale surveying again and clear horizons will make
seabird observations much easier. The weather forecast is not favourable
post today for RIB operations so we are hoping the weather conditions hold
for as long as possible. On the social front, last night we held the
inaugural Balleny Island Quiz Night with yummie chocolate up for grabs. It
was a close contest and obviously the average IQ on the Tangaroa is much
higher than the norm. Thoughts and decision making are turning towards our
remaining operational days for scientific opportunities and the transit back
to Wellington.

REGARDS:

Hully, Sarah and Nick
