Yesterday morning we woke to strengthening winds and increasing swell/waves, the beginning of a spell of bad weather, so we headed for the western side of Sturge Island to shelter in the lee. The sun came out and the sea state was calm enough to allow Remora to be launched in the afternoon and 3 humpback whale biopsies were collected. We also came across a big 'ball' of krill and feeding humpback whales late in the day, so in the evening krill samples were collected and a detailed grid survey was conducted of the krill 'ball' and the surrounding area by the Tangaroa. This morning we ran into a 50 knot front of wind and today we will continue to run up and down the island in the lee. The poor weather is expected to start to ease by Friday.
On a personal note, Paul S, our seabird expert and whale observer, is celebrating his 31st Wedding Anniversary with his lovely wife Joy today, congratulations Paul and Joy.
